Dinners for WII Warriors
We serve meals to our wounded, ill, and injured (WII) warriors and their family members at military treatment facilities on both coasts to begin forming a relationship with them. The atmosphere of fellowship we bring to the table is perhaps the single most important component of what we do for the WII Warriors; it is the beginning of a lasting relationship of trust and support. It is the beginning of understanding what each family's needs are and how our grass-roots approach can help meet those needs.
At the military treatment facilities, we serve meals 2-4 times a month and distribute free copies of The Wounded Warrior Handbook and books by other experts on PTS and Combat Recovery. We also provide other resources to enhance the healing and recovery of wounded, ill, and injured service members, their caregivers, and their families. We help keep the Marine Corps Liaison Office supply closet well stocked for the day-to-day needs of outpatient families at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
MarineParents.com's original outreach program, Purple Heart Hero Support™, began in 2007 at Bethesda Naval Hospital, now Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). Since then, we've had an ongoing tradition of bringing meals into the hospital for our wounded, ill, and injured service members and their family members.
With our transition to the outreach program Warrior Support Team™ (WST), we are continuing our tradition of Sunday dinner at the hospital. These dinners give us an opportunity to meet wounded, ill, and injured warriors and their family members, to provide them immediate resources, and, most importantly, to provide them a chance to share their concerns.
We serve meals twice a month to approximately 80 people each time, at a cost of roughly $900 per event. Our volunteers for this program also provide drinks, fresh fruit, desserts, paper goods, and small items like puzzle books and crayons, sometimes with the help of local community groups. During the dinners, we provide caregivers with Purple Heart Hero Support™ Totes filled with resources and items to assist them during their service member's journey to recovery. The value of the caregiver totes we donate is approximately $80 each. We also distribute our Warrior Reintegration Bags filled with resources and items to assist the warrior's journey to recovery. The value of these bags is approximately $150 each.
